A remarkable milestone was achieved recently as over 4.5 lakh government school students in Andhra Pradesh participated in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination. The exam, which was conducted for students from classes 3 to 5 across 13,104 schools, witnessed active participation even from schools in remote rural and tribal areas as well. This was the reflection of an agreement signed in June 2023 between the AP government and Princeton based ETS to offer customised English assessments for students.
According to School Education Principal Secretary Praveen Prakash, the successful conduct of the TOEFL exam reflects the state's commitment to enhancing English language proficiency among students. Moreover, many plans are underway to extend the examination to more than 16.5 lakh students from classes 6 to 9, spanning across 5,907 schools. Prakash emphasized that successful students will receive certificates from the Education Testing Service (ETS), marking their achievement.
The collaboration between the Andhra Pradesh government and Princeton-based ETS, thus aims to provide customized English assessments for government school students. This partnership seeks to bolster the English language skills of students, potentially developing academic excellence across the state.
