Assam’s Initiatives for Incentivizing Girl’s Education are Unique and Innovative


In a move to Incentivize Girl’s Education in the most direct way possible, Assam has become the first state to give financial incentives to girls for attending school. 

The initiative was announced by state Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who elaborated upon the scheme by saying that the Assam government has decided to incentivize girl education by giving every girl child 100 Rs. for every day that they attend schools. 

The other initiatives of the Assam government aimed at encouraging girl’s education include the rewarding of scooters to all first divisioner girl-students from the state board certification examinations of 2018 and 2019. It was stated that every girl eligible girl will have her scooter, no matter how many girls the state ends up giving scooters to. 

It was reported that as of now, the beneficiaries of the scooter scheme number around 948. In addition to that, it has been reported that the state will give out motorbikes to girl-students who have passed the Senior Secondary exams in the first division. The number of such girls is said to be 22,245 and the state will incur 144.30 crores for providing them all with bikes. 

Other education-centric schemes of Assam include the grant of Rs 1500 and Rs 2000 respectively for undergraduate and postgraduate students, to be deposited directly in their bank accounts. The grant is to facilitate the students in buying the books ahead of the beginning of their respective academic sessions.  

The students are bracing for the 10th and 12th state board exams that got delayed owing to the pandemic and are now going to be held from May 11, and May 12, 2021, respectively.
