The students entering Class 9 for the academic year 2024-25, under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) must adhere to specific guidelines regarding subject choices. According to the CBSE Secondary School Curriculum 2024-25, students are required to select at least two language subjects, Social Science, Mathematics, and Science. Additionally, they have the option to choose a third language subject and a skill-based or elective subject. The curriculum also mandates three compulsory subjects: Health and Physical Education, Work Experience, and Art Education.
CBSE's official notification highlights that Class 9 and Class 10 are a composite course, meaning students must continue in Class 10 the subjects they chose in Class 9. For Mathematics, the Board examination is offered at two levels in Class 10: Mathematics - Basic and Mathematics - Standard. Students opting for Mathematics - Basic can take Applied Mathematics (241) as an elective in Class 11, but they may not be permitted to take Mathematics (041) at the Senior Secondary level. Conversely, students who choose Mathematics - Standard can opt for either of the two Mathematics courses at the Senior Secondary level.
In instances where a student fails one of the three compulsory subjects (Science, Mathematics, or Social Science) but passes the skill subject offered as the sixth optional subject, the skill subject will replace the failed subject, and the Class 10 board exam result will be calculated accordingly. Similarly, if a student fails a language subject among the first five subjects, it can be replaced by a passed language taken as the sixth or seventh subject, ensuring either Hindi or English remains as a passed language in the first five subjects. These guidelines aim to provide a flexible and comprehensive framework for students, ensuring continuity and support in their academic journey.
