In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Directorate of Education (DoE) in Delhi has implemented ‘10 bagless days’ for students in classes 6 to 8 across both government and private schools. The initiative aims to make learning more engaging, stress-free, and hands-on, according to new guidelines formulated by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
The DoE circular explains that these bagless days will include visits to historical and cultural sites, tourist spots, and craft centers. Students will also have opportunities to meet local artisans, deepening their understanding of cultural heritage and the importance of its preservation. The guidelines encourage activities that make optimal use of school resources, including events under the Happiness Curriculum or educational excursions.
The Education Ministry highlighted that the program will also introduce students to vocational skills through practical sessions. During these days, students will participate in fun, skill-oriented courses that provide hands-on experience in crafts such as carpentry, electrical work, metalwork, gardening, and pottery. This exposure to vocational skills will be facilitated by local experts like carpenters, gardeners, and potters, giving students a brief internship in various trades. By developing experiential learning and vocational understanding, this initiative seeks to cultivate practical skills and an appreciation for local crafts among Delhi's students.
