The Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) reported that the number of students per school in Karnataka is significantly low, highlighting the need for better optimisation of school infrastructure. According to the 2023-24 data analysis, the state has 1,078 schools with zero enrollment, despite having 1,572 sanctioned teacher positions.
At the same time, 7,821 schools are still operating with a single teacher catering to more than 2.7 lakh students. And out of the 75,869 schools in the state, 8% have less than 10 students, 11% have 10-20 students, & 8% have less than 30 students. Also about 20% have 100-200 students, and 10% have 200-300 students. Only 6% of schools have more than 500 students as per the report.
The mandated student-teacher ratio in Karnataka is 30:1, but the state now has a score of 22 for classes 1-5, 18 for classes 6-8, and 28 for higher secondary classes. Also, there has been a slight decline in student enrollment, from 1.23 crore in 2022-23 to 1.19 crore in 2023-24. This report calls for the need to optimise school facilities and address the mismatch between student numbers and teacher allocation.
