The Kerala government is considering implementing 'bag-free days' in schools to address concerns over the heavy weight of students' backpacks. General Education Minister V Sivankutty announced that the state would soon make a decision regarding the issue, following increasing complaints from parents and education advocates. The initiative aims to alleviate the burden on students from Class 1 to 12 by instituting at least four days each month when students are not required to carry their school bags.
This move comes in response to persistent reports that, despite the state's efforts to reduce backpack weight by printing textbooks in two parts, students' bags remain excessively heavy. To further tackle the issue, the government plans to issue guidelines on the permissible weight of school bags: for Class 1 students, the bags should weigh between 1.6 kg and 2.2 kg, and for Class 10 students, between 2.5 kg and 4.5 kg.
This 'bag-free days' initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the educational experience and well-being of students in Kerala's public education system. The government continues to receive numerous suggestions and complaints from parents and stakeholders, prompting these proactive measures to reduce the physical strain on children. The state's commitment to addressing this issue reflects a growing awareness of the importance of students' physical health and comfort in fostering a conducive learning environment.
