Delhi’s Chief Minister launched a virtual school for students across the country. The school is named Delhi Model Virtual School (DMVS), and will cater to classes 9 th to 12 th . The application process for the DMVS began on August 31, 2022.
At an online media briefing by the Chief Minister of Delhi, more details were provided. Admission is open to students from across India, it will be affiliated to the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE), and its certification would be at par with CBSE or other boards. Starting in academic year 2022-2023, admissions will be given to students in Class 9 only. It is stated that besides the regular curriculum, students will also be prepared by experts for entrance exams like NEET, CUET and JEE, along with skill-based training. The virtual school is inspired by virtual classes which were necessitated due to the Covid-19 pandemic and will enable quality- education to students who are not able to attend physical classes for any reason. All classes will be online, and recorded lectures will also be uploaded online. The Delhi Chief Minister claimed that the DMVS would be a milestone in the education sector and will redefine and revolutionize education in the country.
In response to media reports claiming that DMVS is India’s first virtual school, the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) said that the first virtual school in the country was already launched in August 2021 by the Union Education Minister. NIOS further said that there are about 7000 study centres affiliated with NIOS which are providing academic support to students, and about 1500 centres providing skill-based vocational courses to learners of NIOS virtual school.
