Leading in NEP implementation, Karnataka to introduce the four-year undergraduate program


Karnataka has announced the formulation of the framework for the launch of the four-year undergraduate program modeled as per the NEP guidelines. The higher education department of the state has made public its plans for the introduction of the undergraduate course from the next academic year. The course is to be made available in all the state universities. The curriculum framework will be available by the end of July. 

With the announcement, Karnataka attempts to be seen as the flag bearer of the NEP implementation. 

It was reported that two committees—the faculty and the subject committee are in different stages of formation.  

The proposed program will have multiple entry and exit options. A student enrolled in the four-year course can get certification after completing two semesters, and can earn a diploma after completion of four years. After completion of eight semesters the degree 

There won’t be strict compartments of subjects that can be chosen. A student with a science major can choose minors from other branches. Language and life skills are mandatory. The programme will be holistic — every subject a student opts for will be useful for him, either to help in personality or to improve employability,” said Thimme Gowda, vice chairman, Karnataka State Higher Education Council.

It is also reported that there will be several subject combinations to choose from and with an additional year, the student will be able to earn two degrees and will be able to apply for Ph.D. without the need for separate masters.
