The Performance Assessment Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH), an NCERT unit, has proposed that student performance from Classes 9, 10, and 11 be incorporated into the final Class 12 report card. PARAKH has submitted this recommendation in a report to the education ministry. PARAKH, created last year to standardise assessments across school boards, suggests mixing formative assessments (ongoing classwork, group discussions, projects) with summative assessments (term-end exams) for a comprehensive evaluation.
The proposed weight distribution for the final Class 12 report card includes 15% from Class 9, 20% from Class 10, 25% from Class 11, and 40% from Class 12. For formative and summative assessments, the suggested split is:
- Class 9: 70% formative, 30% summative
- Class 10: 50% formative, 50% summative
- Class 11: 40% formative, 60% summative
- Class 12: 30% formative, 70% summative
These recommendations aim to align evaluation practices across all school boards. After consultations with 32 school boards over the past year, PARAKH's report has been submitted for feedback. An initial round of discussions with officials from Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar took place last week. During the meeting, states suggested an alternative evaluation method: the final Class 10 score should comprise 40% from Class 9 and 60% from Class 10, while the final Class 12 score should include 40% from Class 11 and 60% from Class 12. These discussions continue as stakeholders seek a consensus on the most effective assessment model.
