The Importance of UDISE+ in India’s Education System

UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education) is a system of online real-time data collection from schools, which was introduced by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) under the Ministry of Education. UDISE was set up during 2018-19 to replace the old practice of manual data entry in paper format. UDISE+ system is an improved version, especially in the areas of data capture, mapping and verification.

The UDISE+ system collects information from schools imparting formal education (both recognized and unrecognized) from pre-primary to Class XII. An online data collection form (DCF) will capture parameters including school infrastructure, dropout levels, teachers, enrolment and examination results, etc. It comprises of 1.5 million schools, 9.5 million teachers and 260 million students across the country.

Information collected through the digital UDISE+ platform is expected to help government departments to plan, optimize and implement programs and assessment. It also contains data related to school safety, expenses and vocational education. Every school is assigned a unique UDISE+ code (an 11-digit code, which is a national level identifier based on geographical location). Once assigned, this code becomes permanent and cannot be changed.

Linked to UDISE+ is the “Know Your School” module, which includes basic information and school report summary filled according to the respective state, district and block. You can search the details either by the UDISE Code, by Name of school, or by Pin Code of the school location. Detailed reports include 11 different sections, and cover all information about the school.
