To start a preschool in India the promoters must have necessary statutory permissions. There is no union law with regard to initiating of a preschool but in certain states, preschools come under the purview of state private school education acts. Other laws such as Right to Education act apply to the preschools. The approval of the municipality or Municipal Corporation must be secured. Building safety certification is also required. A running Kindergarten can admit children in preschool provided it has obtained a preschool certificate. one can open their own playschool or opt for a franchisee.
1. Select a location
A suitable location must be selected to open a preschool. It should be easily accessible and must have a healthy environment. Availability of a playground conducive to the ‘play way method’ is essential. Availability of enough space must be the prime concern while selecting the location besides the availability of necessary amenities like water for the children. Safety apparatuses must be in place. Medical facilities must be available and must be within access. The selection of the location of a preschool depends on the promoter but the location must preferably be a place where playschools are not already present.
The building that houses the preschool/playschool must be safe and the interiors must have a child-friendly ambiance. It must have a hygienic environment with proper facilities.
2. Budget and Investment
The finances must be sourced for the infrastructural requirements, teachers and staff, supplies like toys and fixtures of the playground etc.
In the early formative stage, the budget of the preschool must be laid out. The areas that require investment include business research, project details, rental advance, toys and equipment, furniture, study material, stationery, colors and paints, space customization and alterations in the building etc. Special attention must be paid to the quality of the school supplies and material for the school. The fee must also be decided at this stage.
3.Teachers and other staff
Recruiting teachers for the playschool needs to be meticulous and planned. Teachers must be qualified with considerable communication skills. Verbal skills are important as the children are at the stage of early childhood development. It is the stage when language is acquired. Online portals like educatorOne.com can be used to recruit suitable teachers for a preschool.
Interaction with the parents is an important aspect for a preschool. Parents’ feedback about child’s behavior and learning must be seriously taken, recorded and assessed.
4.Develop a preschool curriculum
A well-defined curriculum should be established. The curriculum can be drawn after referring to the existing curriculum of certain reputed playschools. Quality of the curriculum is crucial as it is what engages the children and prepare them for the subsequent school experience. The curriculum ensures that the time which children spend in the preschool is proved productive and reflects in their growth and social skills.
5. Advertising the preschool
The school must be adequately advertised in the locality. Online advertising must be undertaken with the offline advertising campaign.
The preschool/ playschool is to be seen as an enterprise involving a major responsibility. It must follow all the statutory and child protection guidelines.
