Teacher Strength in the Indian Education System Crosses a Crore


The Ministry of Education published the Unified District Information System for Education Plus 2024-25 report, delivering an elaborate snapshot of school learning throughout India. The teacher strength in India has crossed 1 crore, marking an important milestone for the learning system for the first time since the UDISE+ launch.

Direct Admission Deadline

The report depicts that the teaching workforce grew from 94.8 lakh in 2022-23 to more than 1.01 crore in 2024 -25, a 6.7% increase in just 2 years. This enhanced the teacher-student ratio to 1:10 at the Foundational stage, 21:1 in Secondary classes, 13:1 at the Preparatory stage and 17:1 in Middle grades, exceeding the NEP benchmark of 30:1.

Retention Improves

Student retention rose to 98.9% at Foundational, 92.4% at Preparatory, 82.8% at Middle & 47.2% at Secondary.

Dropout Rates Fall

Dropouts fell to 2.3% at Preparatory, 3.5% at Middle & 8.2% at Secondary level.

Enrolment Development

The Gross Enrolment Ratio went up to 90.3% in Middle grades & 68.5% at the Secondary level.

School Infrastructure

Internet connectivity reached 63.5%, up from 53.9%.
Electricity usage covered 93.6% of schools & 99.3% had safe drinking water.
Schools with computers increased to 64.7%, up from 57.2% last year.

Smooth Transitions

Progress rates increased 98.6% from Foundational to Preparatory, 92.2% from Preparatory to Middle & 86.6% from Middle to Secondary.

Sanitation facilities

Boys’ toilets (96.2%), girls’ toilets (97.3%) & handwashing stations (95.9%).

Zero-Enrolment Schools & Single-Teacher

Zero-enrolment schools dropped by 38%, while Single-teacher schools declined by 6%.

Inclusivity

Schools with handrails & ramps rose to 54.9%, enhancing availability for children with disabilities.

Teaching Gender Representation

Female teachers form 54.2% of the workforce.

Girls’ Enrolment

Girls’ enrolment increased to 48.3%.

Gender-Sensitive Classrooms

The Ministry highlighted that larger female representation plays an essential part in nurturing “supportive classrooms & gender-sensitive”.

The UDISE+ 2024-25 report emphasises the country’s continuous development in elevating school infrastructure, strengthening teacher counts, advancing inclusivity, and improving student retention, creating a more resilient school education model.
