Karnataka SDMC Forum Urges Teachers' Day Celebration Without Declaring Holiday

The Karnataka State SDMC Coordination Forum has submitted a memorandum to the Department of School Education and Literacy, urging that Teachers' Day, celebrated on September 5, be observed in schools without declaring a holiday. The memorandum, addressed to officials including the education commissioner in Bengaluru, the DDPI in Dakshina Kannada, and various Block Education Officers, highlights concerns over disruptions to students' education caused by the declaration of holidays on this occasion.

According to the forum, Teachers' Day is meant to be celebrated at the school level to educate children about its significance, in line with the educational guidelines for 2024-25. The guidelines also suggest involving various organisations in the celebrations. However, some taluk and district-level bodies have been declaring holidays for teachers, disrupting the learning process and violating government orders and the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

The forum stressed that the declaration of such holidays affects children's educational progress and called for disciplinary action against those responsible for unauthorised closures. The memorandum insists that Teachers' Day should be celebrated in schools, ensuring students remain engaged and learn the importance of the day, in compliance with official guidelines.
